DETROIT ABIDES: FREE HOLIDAY MOVIE IN EASTERN MARKET
Celebrate the Holidays with a community screening of It’s A Wonderful Life and a poignant discussion on the economic crisis with a panel of local bankers.

Detroit, Michigan, December 8, 2008 – Every 3rd Wednesday of the month, Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit, Detroit Evolution Laboratory and Eastern Market Corporation partner to present Detroit Abides. This free Sustainability Gathering celebrates the connections between health, the environment, agriculture, food security, the economy and our community. This month leads into our topic, the Economy, lightly with a free screening of the holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life. After the film, Dan Carmody of Eastern Market will facilitate a discussion with a panel of local bankers on finances in an economic crisis. The screening will be on Wednesday, December 17th at 7 pm in Eastern Market’s heated Shed 5.

It's a Wonderful Life takes place in the fictional town of Bedford Falls shortly after World War II and stars James Stewart as George Bailey, who owns a savings and loan association that’s in turmoil. George’s imminent suicide on Christmas Eve gains the attention of his guardian angel, Clarence, who is sent to help him in his hour of need. Much of the film is told through flashbacks spanning George's entire life. Through these flashbacks we see all the people whose lives have been touched by George and the difference he has made to the community in which he lives.

Immediately after the screening Dan Carmody of Eastern Market will facilitate a discussion and Q&A with a panel of local bankers. Lorenzo Thurman of Detroit Micro-Enterprise Fund and John Schoeniger of Shore Bank Enterprise Detroit will be two of the panelists. Local non-profit groups and vendors will also be on hand to offer information and support. Urban Grounds Coffee will be open in the shed with hot beverages and Angela of Detroit Evolution Laboratory will offer a hot, healthy and hearty selection. This popular event has quickly become a relaxed meeting place for those working to create a sustainable Detroit.

Using a projector, large screen and PA system everyone will be able to relax and enjoy the film. Though some chairs will be provided, it is advised to bring a folding or camp chair. The screening is held in Eastern Market’s enclosed and heated Shed 5, but it is a large and airy space so sweaters and blankets are recommended too. The screening is open to the public and free. Shed 5 is located at the corner of Russell and Alfred. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to Shed 5.

Yesterday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran a story with the fairly innocuous headline "Pittsburgh's renaissance holds lesson for Cleveland" (http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/11/pittsburghs_renaissance_holds.html).

What followed was a pretty reasonable analysis about how Pittsburgh is positioned to weather the looming recession much better than Cleveland. The article points to the stronger presence of Fortune 500 companies, more regional cooperation, the strength brought by Carnegie Mellon and the beautiful redevelopment of Pittsburgh's downtown.

But the article seemed to also have an emotional undercurrent to it: Pittsburgh is making it and Cleveland is failing. Nothing's going right here. The sky is falling.

The article has incited a strong online response ... as of this moment, only a little more than 24 hours after the article was first posted, 113 comments have been made. Many are lamenting what they see as a chance in our city's fortunes. One respondent noted that "in the 1980's and 1990's, Pittsburgh would regularly send Pittsburgh officials to Cleveland to see what we were doing right ... Well, they learned a few things, and went well beyond what we had done."

Another shares a similar sentiment: "the reason the PD has to write these stories is that people in Cleveland still haven't woken up - other cities are passing us by while the leadership does nothing and Clevelanders accept it."

But this article seems a little disingenuous. What GLUE has taught me, above all else, is not that there are clear winners or losers in the industrial Midwest, but rather that we share a similar set of amenities, opportunities, and yes, challenges. We have different identities, to be sure, and different strategies for moving our cities forward. But the unspoken question seems to be whether some GLUE cities are beyond saving or will take longer to save or maybe whether they're worth saving in the first place.

So has Cleveland faltered in some key way that Pittsburgh has not? And has it done so in only 2 years, given that The Economist labeled both Cleveland and Pittsburgh the most livable cities in the U.S. in 2006? Or has PNC's purchase of National City led to some naval gazing about why Cleveland and why not Pittsburgh?

I definitely can't answer objectively. But my gut tells me that the grassroots discussions that GLUE is launching, where every city is treated like an equal and no city is written off as the official "Rust Belt Loser", will probably have more power to promote change than this kind of "woe-is-me" article.

On October 12th and 13th I attended the ImPAct conference in Erie, Pennsylvania. I had the honor to sit on a panel with John Elliott of the Erie Redevelopment Authority where we were able to talk to some amazing young professionals about “Young People’s Roles in Community Revitalization”.
Some of the conference’s other topics included, ““Online Strategies to Encourage Online Giving and Fundraising...and Other Neat Online Tools”, “Not Your Father’s Problem…Anymore”, “Why I Ran for Elected Office”, and “Nonprofit Board Leadership” to name a few. The morning keynote spoke about Linked In and the benefits of online professional networking and some great tips on how to maximize these experiences. The lunch keynote speaker, Steve S. Little addressed the group about young people’s ability to maximize their business potential and gave 7 Irrefutable Rules of Small Business growth. He also talked about his new book, “The Milkshake Moment: Overcoming Stupid Systems, Pointless Policies and Muddled Management to Realize Real Growth,” which was surprisingly very motivating and thought provoking.
It was interesting attending a conference outside of the region (fascinating that it was ‘outside of the region’ being that Erie is a straight shot from Cleveland and less than two hours away) and hearing the perspectives of other young professionals from outside of the state. It was great to exchange stories, ideas and best practices with these young professionals in an eager and enthusiastic environment. As I become a serial conference attendee, I learn more and more that most young professionals despite their state or region are looking for a few of the same things: a good job, good pay, good entertainment in your city, a safe city, a walk-able or fairly easily maneuverable city, and folks that appreciate the work their doing. I beg the question, “Are these needs so difficult to meet in our post industrial rust best cities?”
It was also interesting being on the other side of the table at the conference. This is the first time that I was a panelist for this diverse a group of people (business, non-profit, government, midlevel, senior level), it was intense. Still, it was great to spread the word about GLUE and have different kinds of people come up to me afterwards and ask how can they get involved and to continue to network with yp’s from throughout the greater region. It is crucial that we continue having these conversations and creating these dialogues, sharing these best practices and building these sorts of coalitions and collaborations in order to make our cities the types of places that we want to stay in for generations to come.

GLUE wants to broaden conversations about economic development. Do you have answers to any of the following?

1) What could be done to make it easier to start a small business in your city?

2) What is being done to creatively "fill the pipeline" in your city? Particularly with regard to filling the employment pipeline with low income people and people of color?

3) What are holes in your city's economic development strategy?

4) What are problems with typical conversations about economic development?

5) Give me an example (Columbus?) of how young people have been successfully brought to the table in conversations about economic development.

6) Do you know of recent and successful examples to create green jobs in our cities?

Grand Rapids has districts within the city limits; each district or neighborhood has an affectionate nickname somewhat descriptive of the culture of the neighborhood. Heartside is transitioning from the so-called mission district to the Arts & Entertainment district.

Overall West Michigan is more conservative than the east side of the state however; our council is very pro-social justice. Personally, I like the district representation on our city council. The partisanship to me, is less of an issue because our councilman's values are what keep him.

How do at large elections work? Everyone gets to vote for all the at-larges, so the top 5 vote getters get 5 positions if there are 5 at large seats?

Milwaukee is by district and non-partisan. I wonder what difference it would make it it were partisan. How does that go in places where you have it?

The myopia/parochialims of district races is also a positive particularism/localism. It's not bad to focus on district-level issues intensely, it's just too bad when it topples over into no bigger picture.

The reality is that most of the aldermanic work is pothole filling for your constituents. I wounder if there is an accountability dilution effect with at-large council seats. When it's by district, you know who you have to serve. If your base can go all over the city, you can write large areas off--and the tendency would be to do so. E.g., I know I can win with my base of support, but region X is pretty set against me, so I'm giving them the least attention on crime, property issues/neighborhood services, infrastructure/public works, business development, etc.

Ezra Klein has Obama's speech on urban policies here:
http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/ezraklein_archive?month=06&year=2008&base_name=metro_obama

It's got some good policy ideas, but I think the real difference between this rhetoric and that of the past is that he makes a point to talk about metro areas, not just cities. He really gets into some regionalist langage - check it out.

Nope! Milwaukee used to have this many years ago, but in the latter days of Socialist rule, the streetcars were eliminated, the designated slums were cleared and replaced with highways, and the car came to complete and total domination.

Gas prices and other reality checks have not fazed the auto hegemony one bit, and its most stalwart defenders aim to put the final squeeze into the dying county bus system, the only local means of mass transit. (And they hate, hate, hate any mention of any kind of rail.)

"Unless you’re one of the fringe that actually rides the bus, transit just isn’t that important."
