Ford School of Public Policy are sponsoring "Climate Change in the Great Lakes Basin: Policy Options and Public Opinion", a panel that will review current policy commitments and provide an overview of public opinion on climate change and public policy options. Glaeser: "It's Time to Unleash Our Cities"

Mon, 02/14/2011 - 13:27 by Emily Knoll View Profile

Happy Valentines Day! Here's a great article from today's NY Times Freakonomics blog about the importance of American cities in revitalization. Ed Glaeser, the author of Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier, urges us to "get over Jefferson", and "continue to innovate and grow our species' greatest invention here at home. We may rediscover a little bit of our swagger while we're at it." His celebration of cities and pragmatic view of their development is enlightening and entertaining, and Stephen Dubner does a great job of introducing Glaeser's views. Check it out!

Photo of the Week and a Superbowl Shout-Out

Tue, 02/08/2011 - 02:47 by Emily Knoll View Profile

EileenDiv recently uploaded this awesome shot of the Russel Center to GLUE's flickr pool. This mural is the largest of the midwest, and every time I see it--whether in person or not--there's a new facet of the mural I get sucked into. The new mural celebrates Detroit's history, especially through the chimera-like tribute to Detroit's Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers.

Speaking of athletic tributes, Detroit got a shout-out at the Super Bowl during an awesome Chrysler commercial. With great shots of the city, an endorsement from Eminem, and the slogan "imported from Detroit", millions of Super Bowl watchers got to see a side of Detroit that the media doesn't often publicize....

Photo of the Week by compujeramey

Mon, 11/15/2010 - 03:42 by Emily Knoll View Profile

Jeramey Jannene, a.k.a. compujeramey, took this photo of Milwaukee's Juneau Town the other day. Jeramy writes, "A former retail hub around Market Square (just north) in the city is now a great stretch of repurposed historic buildings." Juneau town is home to tons of industrial rehabilitated buildings and an eclectic nightlife, which is pushing more people to live where they work, play, and shop. This photo is of Water Street, whose historic retail buildings have been refitted as restaurants, businesses, and small shops. Thanks, Jeramey, for highlighting this awesome part of Milwaukee, and thanks to everyone who has been posting their photos to GLUE's Flickr Pool!

Buffalo tailgate party is coming to Times Square on Saturday, November 13th! The fourth annual "Buffalo Takes Manhattan" tailgate will benefit PUSH Buffalo, a group of community organizers working to make affordable housing a reality in Buffalo. This year's honoree and special guest is Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion Steve Mesler, a Buffalonian with a strong commitment to community service and his hometown.

Here are some new and exciting party developments:

--Two new powerful film shorts about Buffalo will receive their NYC premieres at 7:30 PM. The first was produced by the Convention and Visitors bureau in conjunction with Buffalo's preservation community and features stunning aerial footage of Buffalo. The second chronicles organizations, including PUSH, on the edge of the urban sustainability movement.

--Several leading Buffalo artists, including Julian Montague, will show work at the party.

--A date with Steve Mesler, our honoree, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

--Thanks to our sponsors, we will have plenty of Buffalo's two favorite beers-Labatts and Flying Bison-on hand.

Come celebrate a year of amazing successes in Buffalo's neighborhoods, as featured on Extreme Makeover!
