Photo Contest Winner Org of the Week: The Hub of Detroit

Tue, 06/16/2009 - 02:20 by Abby Wilson View Profile

Thanks, Spencer, for the "recycled" image you submitted that won last week's photo contest. Because he won, Spencer Olinek got to tell GLUE what organization he loves in Detroit that deserves a shout-out. He chose the Hub, a non-profit full-service retail bike shop whose income supports a free youth and adult education program called Back Alley Bikes. Pop Up Pittsburgh, Inspired by Cleveland - May 30th

Sun, 04/05/2009 - 12:55 by Abby Wilson View Profile

In the last year and a half, Sarah and I have traveled to almost two dozen GLUE cities. Although differences abound, vacancy is something each of these places copes with. I have learned about OVER TWENTY BABIES either a) being born or b) on the way since Barack Obama was elected on November 4, 2008. I have long joked with my friends that they are personally taking responsibility for reversing population decline in our downtrodden older industrial cities. Which leads me to an idea. If you live in a GLUE city and either had a baby after November 4th, are having a baby, or have a partner or friend who is having a baby (and are planning on STAYING in their GLUE city or moving to ANOTHER GLUE CITY once the baby arrives), will you let us know?

Braddock, PA - Out of the Furnace and Into the Fire

Wed, 01/07/2009 - 15:57 by Abby Wilson View Profile

Jim Straub published a heartbreaking piece about Braddock, PA in the most recent Monthly Review, from which I've quoted only very briefly below. The title alludes to Out of This Furnace by Thomas Bell. If you haven't read it, check it out. If you aren't familiar with Braddock, you should be...
